Hiking in Norway: The eye-catching region of Valdres extends from the lush and water rich valleys in the south, to Jotunheimen’s impressive mountain range in the north. The region is known for its various outdoor activities throughout the year; such as hiking, cycling and fishing in the summer and cross-country and downhill skiing in the winter.
Because of the stable climate, you are normally guaranteed snow from November until May. More than 1,500 kilometres of prepared cross-country ski trails await the cross-country enthusiast. Those who are more interested in the thrill of downhill skiing can challenge themselves in the alpine centers or terrain parks. Other popular winter activities are husky safaries, ice fishing, kiting and snow rafting.
The hiking season lasts from mid-June to mid-September. Whether you are looking for hikes suitable for children, legendary hikes such as Besseggen or Bukkelægret, 2000-metre summits, or just want to spend a couple of hours walking, Valdres is your natural choice. There are also many great areas for rock climbing and a brand new Via Ferrata route.
For food-lovers, the region should also be well worth the visit. The region boasts a variety of locally produced food, such as cheese, ice cream, cured meats, sour cream porridge and the semi-fermented trout (known as «rakfisk»), and during the first weekend in November you can even visit the popular Rakfisk Festival. Believe us: It tastes better than it sounds.
